about knockan crag

rock trails

All the trails start from the car park; either climb the steps or follow the all abilities trail to the Knockan Wall. From here there is a wide, generally flat path suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs to the Rock Room. From the Rock Room there are three options for walking around Knockan Crag NNR.

Remember to be prepared and take suitable footwear, warm clothes and waterproofs. It is also advisable to carry food and a drink with you too.

Crag Top Trail

The Crag Top Trail will take you past the Moine Thrust and along the top of Knockan Crag for superb views of the Assynt mountains. The route has some steep climbs, but it's a good path and clearly marked. You'll need good walking shoes, and warm clothes and waterproofs. Allow about 1 hour.

Thrust Trail

The Thrust Trail takes you to the place all the fuss is about: the Moine Thrust, where you can bridge 500 million years with your bare hands. From here you can return to the car park or continue on the Crag Top Trail. The route is clearly marked, with a short climb up steps to the Thrust itself. Allow 30 minutes.

Quarry Trail

An easier option is the Quarry Trail. This takes you part of the way to the Thrust, then doubles back before the path starts climbing. Allow 20 minutes.

Rock Route

Travel the Rock Route by car or bicycle. The route is approximately 55 miles / 89 kms long. It follows the A835 from Ullapool in the south, then the A837 and A894 to Rhiconich in the north. There are two short detours to Stac Pollaidh (5 miles / 8 kms along the unclassified road to Achiltibuie) and Loch Assynt (2.5 miles / 4 kms along the A837 to Lochinver). At each of 12 sites along the route, you’ll find panels at the roadside to tell you more about how the landscape and the wonderful views were formed...more details
