Foinaven and Arkle

The dramatic hills of Foinaven and Arkle are formed of quartzite of Cambrian age lying on top of the ancient Lewisian gneiss. It is the quartzite rocks which give the hills their distinctive white appearance. Erosion of the quartzite has formed scree slopes with cone like piles of debris at their bases. There are several routes up these hills, a walking guidebook will supply more information about them. Visitors should be aware that these are remote and rugged areas.
