Achnasheen Terraces

The large terraces on the hillside to the west of Achnasheen were formed at the end of the last ice age, around 11,000 to 12,500 years ago. As the last glaciers melted, a large block of ice dammed the glen forming a loch. Melt waters drained from the glaciers into the loch, and large flat-topped terraces of sand and gravel formed. As the ice dam itself melted, the loch levels dropped and new terraces formed at these lower levels. The terraces can be viewed from the village of Achnasheen. Parking is available at the train station.
